Abilities:
Trauma surgeon from the future, so he's familiar with medicine as of yet undiscovered. Extremely intelligent and logical, with very high retention, graduated at the top 3% of his class. Speaks Chinese fluently. Can sword-fight, and is very strong, but is rubbish at most types of combat.

Rift-power: Shielding - He can protect others from harm, both physically and mentally, whether the attack is powers or normal physical harm. However, he almost always absorbs part of the damage himself. He can also use this power to lessen damage done directly to himself, but that's more difficult if it's a sustained attack, and works more as a reflex against sudden harm. It does however make him more impervious to accidents.

Appearance:
Simon has keen blue eyes, short dark hair (usually swept back), and a handsome face. His skin is pale and soft, though with scars from bullets in his abdomen and thigh. He's not overly tall (5'10"), but he's very well-built and muscular. He dresses mostly in suits and fancy vests, sometimes in more Chinese inspired clothing, and soft sweaters when he's more relaxed. He carries himself with dignity and poise, graceful and steady, and rarely loses his cool. He's loosened up some, but he generally comes across as very reserved and restrained, though he's got a beautiful smile when he allows someone to see it.

History:
Simon was born in 2491 into a rich family, and raised on Osiris, a high-tech and privileged planet. He has a sister named River who's 9 years younger than him, and with whom he's extremely close, even though she frequently outshone him despite being so much younger. He's very intelligent and an excellent student, and entered MedAcad, the best medical academy on his planet, at age 17. He supported Unification (the Union of the Allied Planets), but given he was from a Core planet with strong Alliance ties, and that he was very young (18) at the beginning of the Unification War against the Independents, and didn't get to see much of the other side of the story. He graduated in the top 3% when he was 21, and finished his internship in 8 months rather than the usual 1 year. From there, he became a resident trauma surgeon on one of the major hospitals in Capital City, on Osiris.

Around this time, River (14 years old) is sent to an elite school called The Academy, and Simon keeps in touch with her through letters, but is never allowed to visit her. Eventually he gets letters written in code, but his parents dismiss it as paranoia and Simon simply being overworked. The code says simply "They're hurting us. Get me out." It takes Simon two years to be able to do so. At one point he's arrested for going into an illegal Blackout Zone, and his father informs him that if he gets mixed up in something like this again, he will not be there to bail Simon out.

Eventually he's contacted by an underground group who say they could rescue River if he funds them. Simon spends vast amounts of money, and with their help manages to enter the Academy disguised as a uniformed official of the Alliance government, and rescue River. They then smuggle her to the planet Persephone via cryogenics. The Alliance freeze his accounts and label both him and River as fugitives. On Persephone he boards the ship Serenity as a passenger, with River still cryogenically frozen.

While onboard Serenity, the crew discovers a beacon has been sent to the Alliance, and the Captain, Mal, believes that Simon was an undercover federal agent who has sent it out. In the ensuing conflict, they realize that Simon was not a fed, but the real fed, in an attempt to gain control of the ship and capture the "fugitives" onboard, ends up shooting the female mechanic Kaylee in the stomach. As Simon is the only doctor on board, he alone has the means to save her, and uses this fact to make sure Mal doesn't hand Simon and River over to the Alliance. Mal agrees only out of concern for Kaylee and resents most heavily anyone exerting power over him aboard his own ship. After Simon has done all he can for Kaylee, Mal decides to find out what Simon had in his crate. Mal openes it up, finding Simon's sister, River. Simon then explains the situation to the crew. Because of the need for Simon and River to stay on the move, Mal offers Simon a post as medic on Serenity, and Simon accepts.

Simon soon settles into life on the ship, spending time with River, and attempting to figure out what happened to her at the Academy. The government had been "playing with her brain", making her psychic (or perhaps enhancing abilities she already had), but also extremely mentally unstable, so he spends a lot of time taking care of her. They manage to stay off the radar of the Alliance, despite some close shaves. Simon takes a long time to befriend the other people on the ship, and has a lot of tension with a few of them, and it takes a while before he is officially accepted as part of the group. He does however, very slowly, become romantically involved with Kaylee, though his rather lacking social skills and unwillingness to focus romance means it takes him over a year and a near-death experience to get there.

Eventually it becomes clear that River is psychic, and has gleaned several government secrets that are eating at her, and are the reason for the Alliance hunting her down, eventually sending an Operative after her. This gives the crew no choice but to figure out what those secrets are, and share them with the world. Simon barely survives, and loses several friends in the process, but his sister's mind is much better for it.

After that, they manage to lay low for several months. With River acting as the new pilot, Simon allows himself to properly settle into this new life of (surprisingly honourable) crime, smuggling, and the occasional legal job, and properly call the spaceship his home. And then he's torn from it by falling through the rift.
